Wicked: Is it still the Best Show in London? [2026 Review]

I’ll be honest: I can’t even remember the last time I actually sat down and watched The Wizard of Oz. It’s one of those stories that’s just etched into your brain from childhood. But stepping into the Apollo Victoria Theatre to see Wicked? That is an entirely different beast altogether.
As a newcomer to West End, I actually didn't realise that these grand theatres often have their own specific play that runs almost every single night for years on end! The Apollo Victoria Theatre, originally opened in 1930 as a "super-cinema", has a rich history of hosting massive hits like the 18-year run of Starlight Express, but since September 2006, it has been the permanent home of Wicked. Even after 20 years in London, the show is still a popular phenomenon. The "Emerald City" at the Apollo Victoria is consistently packed, proving that the backstory of the Witches of Oz has recurring appeal. Before the ruby slippers and the yellow brick road, there was a complicated, beautiful, and sometimes heartbreaking friendship between two girls who met at Shiz University. It’s a flagship itinerary item for any London visitor, and for good reason.

Production & Costumes
Walking into the auditorium feels like stepping into Oz. The room is draped in emerald green, and the scale of the set is massive. The real star of the set is the giant mechanical Time Dragon perched above the stage. The scale of the production hits you as it actually moves when the show starts.
The costumes are a masterclass in detail. From Shiz University uniforms to the floating bubble that Glinda (Zizi Strallen) descends in. I’m going to keep this spoiler-free, but we have to talk about the Act One finale: "Defying Gravity." It was done to absolute perfection. The combination of lighting, the rising platform, and that soaring vocal belt was so powerful I literally couldn't take my eyes off of the stage.

Acting & Chemistry
The show lives and dies by its leads, and the 2026 cast is truly something special. Emma Kingston as Elphaba and Zizi Strallen as Glinda have a chemistry that is hilarious and deeply moving.
But can we talk about the vocals? The voices on these ladies are unbelievable. Emma’s Elphaba is soulful, while Zizi brings a perfect comedic "sparkle" to Glinda. Their bond feels authentic, reminding you that at its heart, Wicked is a story about female friendship, not just magic.
The rest of the cast was equally as impressive:
Jacob Young as Fiyero
Sarah Ingram as Madame Morrible.
Michael Matus as the Wizard of Oz.
Ross Carpenter as Boq.
And a personal favourite of mine, David McKechnie as Doctor Dillamond, brought so much heart to the role.
The Music
As a newbie in the musical theatre scene, I was surprised by how close the world felt to the original Wizard of Oz, yet it was its own unique experience. I’ve had songs like Popular and Defying Gravity on my playlist since the movie adaptation came out in 2024 (you don't even have to watch the films to know those hits!). But seeing it live? That is another feeling entirely. It sets a mood that makes you realise that no screen can replicate the vibration of a live orchestra and great vocals. To highlight some of the big hits:
Popular: Zizi Strallen’s rendition of Popular was hilarious. It has that same catchy energy you know from the movie, but the comedic timing in a live setting makes it feel a bit different.
Defying Gravity: This is the one everyone waits for, and it did not disappoint. Emma Kingston’s vocals did this song all the justice.
While the big hits are amazing, it was the other music that really set the stage. The haunting opening of No One Mourns the Wicked and the high-energy Dancing Through Life during the ballroom scene completely pulled me into the world of Oz.

FAQs
How does the musical compare to the movies?
Personally, I love live performances more than being behind a screen. While the films are grand, nothing beats the energy of a live orchestra and the cast giving it their all a few feet away from you.
Is Wicked suitable for children?
Yes! It’s recommended for ages 7+. Note that children under 5 are generally not admitted.
What should I wear to the West End?
There’s no strict dress code. "Smart-casual" is the safest bet.
Are there restricted view seats?
Yes, some seats at the far sides of the Stalls or the upper levels have restricted views. Always check the seating plan before buying.
Can I buy merchandise at the theatre?
Absolutely. The lobby is packed with Oz-themed memorabilia.
Where should I eat before the show?
There are many places to eat near the theatre. For a quick and casual bite, you can check out the Market Halls Victoria which houses a variety of tasty options from numerous international cuisines.
Where's the best spot for timeline worthy picture?
The best shot is right outside the main entrance under the glowing green "Wicked" sign at night.
How are the seats at the Apollo Victoria?
The seats are quite close together. I wouldn't recommend walking in with large bags or keeping them in front of you at your feet, as there isn't much room. You’ll definitely have to twist and turn a bit to stay comfortable!

Final Thoughts
Even for someone like me who hasn't seen The Wizard of Oz in years, this experience was truly amazing. Believe it or not, this was actually the very first theatre production I have ever seen, and it has inspired me to see more. London is world-renowned for its theatre for a reason, and if every show is even half as "swankified" as Wicked, I’ve been missing out! If you're looking for a sign to book that first West End ticket, this is it. You'll be changed "for good."
